We are providing six young people we support with a life-changing sailing trip off the coast of Plymouth with The Island Trust!
The Island Trust provides life-enhancing sailing trips to young people with disabilities, complex needs and those experiencing deprivation. In July 2023, the Island Trust are taking six of our young people and four youth mentors on a five-night sailing trip where they will live, eat, cook and sleep on the boat.
The young people we support and who are attending the trip have multiple complex needs, mental health challenges, and adverse life experiences. Lots are also very isolated, have limited support, and struggle engaging. The sailing trip will provide them with a new and skill-developing experience where they learn to sail, whilst having fun with their peers and learning important new skills.
Young people will learn valuable sailing techniques and skills!
During the trip, young people will work together in a team and learn to sail, manoeuvre the sails up and down, steer, navigate, cook, clean and take part in beach games, BBQs and night walks. This is an experience they would not otherwise have, and the IslandTrust describes people leaving the trip with increased motivation, leadership, communication skills and self-worth.
We are looking for more funding to provide our young people with the necessary kit and toiletries to take sailing.
Most of the young people we support are from disadvantaged backgrounds, so we do not want to put any monetary pressure on them providing the kit. Therefore, we are trying to fundraise to ensure we can raise enough to fund kits, transport and youth support workers.
